Our natural or “cleft” finish products are first quarried and lastly cut for dimension, no processes are performed to the surface of the piece. This leaves the natural texture in place and gives a visual depth to the surface not available on our processed surface stone. Natural products also exhibits maximum color variation and depth.
Madison Slate employs a variety of mechanical processes to produce our antiqued finishes. The surface will be notably smoother than our natural products while still affording some visual depth. The edges of the antiqued or tumbled tiles will be significantly “eased” or rounded compared to a natural tile. Color variations will be more subtle on antiqued products.
Honed products have been ground and polished to a smooth finish. The finish has a buttery smooth, almost soft feel. This process eliminates the natural color variation from the stone, leaving the pieces a rich charcoal tone.

Madison Slate limestone colors are, at the most basic level, gray and tan but to leave it there would be like describing the oceans of the world as “blue” – sells it a bit short. The variety of colors and tones in the stone is amazing yet they work together in perfect way that is only possible in natural stone. In many cases opposite sides of a piece will tend towards the opposite base color - gray on one side, tan on the other. This allows the ability to mix or match colors and textures in a design that is truly personal.
